Masterclass course: Film lighting in photography
Date: May 10, 2025
with Mateusz Żurowski and Grzegorz Kurzejamski
“If you have ever wondered how work of this caliber is created, or would like to significantly develop your skills in photography or film, then this event is for you.”
Who is the masterclass on film lighting for, and what does it cover?
The film lighting course with Mateusz Żurowski and Grzegorz Kurzejamski is a comprehensive training program during which we reveal all the secrets of our work with lighting in photo shoots. A whole day filled with theoretical and practical knowledge will leave you with a constant desire to act and dozens of ideas for developing your photography or film art.
We go through all the theoretical elements needed to construct medium and large lighting plans from scratch, also discussing many myths and misconceptions often propagated in amateur photography media. We explain where they came from and which shortcuts can be detrimental to our artistic development.
Theoretical foundations quickly translate into practice with us. We not only show you the equipment and lighting techniques, but also explain the entire planning process and the purpose of each light point. In the practical part, we build several lighting configurations for you and allow ourselves a little improvisation to show you the creative process.
We know how many courses are overflowing with knowledge, leaving you unsure of where to start. To continue your development, you need to show how to use this knowledge. For this reason, since the first editions of our lighting courses and workshops, we have been sharing our proven system consisting of several tasks to be completed, which, when combined, will build a complete stage lighting system. Implementing this system step by step allows for the comprehensive construction of any lighting layout and is an excellent tool for reinforcing lighting techniques. In addition, problems with the implementation of certain points of the system will give us the feedback sometimes needed to assess whether the scene we have chosen is correct—not every space is suitable for photography.
Our training is designed so that every participant, regardless of their level of expertise, can benefit from our knowledge and experience. Beginners in lighting techniques will be able to take photos they could only dream of before after just a few attempts at lighting according to our guidelines, while advanced users will learn new ways to improve the quality of their work. You will learn how to light different film scenes and how to use light in the most creative way. After this course, you will feel more confident working with film lighting and will be ready to take on new challenges in your photography or film work.
Creating an outstanding scenic photo is a complex process that consists of many elements. One of the most important is thoughtful and precise lighting, which can account for the vast majority of the "wow" effect. The ability to see light in a scene is one of the key elements of success in photography. Unfortunately, nowadays, when the media floods us with instant photos produced for quick consumption, this skill is becoming increasingly rare. It seems that the gap between amateur photos and award-winning photos is insurmountable. However, in our course, we demystify many of these beliefs and show that anyone can take a professional, precisely lit photo. The "masterclass" element in the name also means that we impart not only basic knowledge but also our own experience, which is hard to find in other courses and academic books. We show how we created our award-winning works in the most prestigious photography competitions. We also explain how often photos of this caliber are easy to achieve in terms of lighting.
What will we talk about?
-
In photography, light is only one element of our profession, but its wise use can have a decisive impact on achieving the desired visual and aesthetic effect. In film photography, as in film itself, lighting technique is an art in itself, and mastering it requires theoretical knowledge and experience. During the course, participants will have the opportunity to learn about many theories and best practices, allowing them to break away from the conventional methods and lighting patterns familiar from studio photography, which often interfere with the creation of atmospheric scenes. In previous editions of the event, even experienced photographers discovered gaps in their theoretical knowledge that had a measurable impact on their work with light on set.
We will talk about light sources and their characteristics, debunking many myths surrounding the concepts of "soft" and "hard" light, as well as terms that are mainly useful in studio conditions.
We will touch upon many topics related to photo aesthetics and elements that influence it, such as contrast ratios measured in various ways. We will talk about adjusting lighting to the desired character of the image and show how important it is to properly control the overall exposure level of the frame when lighting.
In addition, we will talk about how our eyesight and perception deceive us, and where this lack of precision hinders us and where it helps us.
-
During the course, we will have the opportunity to learn about various tools used to achieve different lighting effects in photography and film. Although light works the same way in all areas of photography, the equipment used to control it can vary greatly. We will present a full range of lighting equipment, discuss its characteristics, and show how it affects the process of creating photos and films. We will also have the opportunity to talk about low-budget and DIY lighting.
-
The course includes a practical block – lighting implementation on a stage of our choice in various configurations. We will not only show you the previously prepared lighting settings, but also, as always, we will guide you through the entire improvisational process in the space in order to comprehensively cover all the theoretical topics that were presented earlier in the course. We will also show you the implementation of our educational, multi-stage framework for creating stage lighting.
-
Knowledge and skills in operating equipment are not enough to achieve success in photography. We will talk about our approach to lighting a scene, paying attention to how to achieve a distinctive style in photography. We will show you how our improvisational process works, which takes place at each session. We will talk about our photos and the process of their creation. We will also show you that the magic of our photos is a combination of a lot of work and excellent technical preparation, and therefore, this magic is within everyone's reach.
-
While the course is strictly about film lighting, it is impossible to separate the process of exposing a photograph from the lighting technique itself. We illuminate our space in order to obtain a photograph in the camera. In the process of capturing a photo, we must determine the appropriate exposure, which is crucial in how we should light the scene. The technique of exposure in film is an art in itself. Unfortunately, this art has been greatly degraded in the world of contemporary commercial photography thanks to new technologies. However, the lack of this knowledge means that where a photographer should make an informed decision, the camera does it for us. We will tell you when it is worth using these conveniences and when technological progress will work to our disadvantage.
Where has the workshop part of the course gone?
In previous editions of events related to film lighting, we conducted workshops that combined the course described here with the opportunity to work in groups on various sets with full lighting equipment and prepared models. With the change of studio location, the scale of the event, and the desire to take an individual approach to each participant, we leave this part of the work to the participants themselves. In addition, since 2023, we have started hosting Portfolio Builder and Photo Gym events in our studio, as well as making the studio available on preferential terms for non-commercial portfolio sessions. We also provide personalized photo and video education on an individual level.
For this reason, if anyone wants to create, devote themselves, and try their hand at scene building and film photography, we invite them to Photo Gym events, our "Z Nurtem Rzeki" meetings, and individual workshops.
Learning from mistakes
A key element of progress in learning is a critical approach to one's own work and the identification of areas where skills can be improved. It is equally important to separate lighting aspects from errors resulting from concepts and other technical issues, such as improper framing or incorrect work with models. These are topics that go beyond the scope of a one-day course, but we will talk about our approach to development and continuous learning. Unfortunately, knowledge alone is not enough to spontaneously turn into skills. This requires experience, and that must come from deliberately organizing sessions that will help us develop. This relationship also works the other way around—we will talk about those photographic activities that can spoil our technique and hinder our development.

At an event of this type, it is impossible to avoid people making Instagram stories and accidentally publishing images of themselves and other participants. The event organizers also reserve the right to capture behind-the-scenes footage for the purpose of advertising the event, the studio, and the event's business partners. For this reason, event participants must agree to the event regulations, in which they consent to the use of their image in such recordings.
This is a formal requirement, but we must also emphasize that we try not to include event participants in the frame. We focus instead on the scenes being built, the hosts, and materials that can later be used to promote the event on the website, Instagram, and Facebook. -
Participants in our events receive preferential prices for selected future events as well as for renting our studio spaces. Discounts are up to 50% and vary depending on the profitability of the activity in question. More information can be obtained directly from the organizers.
